Even wondered why some of us love movies like Napoleon Dynamite that are just straight up bad? Why do we love them so much? Well, podcast and UFC legend Joe Rogan has a take on it.
It’s long been a point of contention among fans of film and critics of film. Sometimes an experience with a movie is enjoyable no matter how well or poorly made it is. Sometimes we like to think that critics just “don’t get it”.
Fellow comic Kurt Metzger agreed with Rogan on the fact that most critics do not really seem to understand the logic. They chose to talk about the film “The Room” which is widely considered to be the worst theatrically released film ever.
“When they say worst, it’s watchable but it’s not boring, I think it’s real lightning in a bottle. It’s the best [film] to go to a theater of people with, because of people shouting at the screen.”
What is the point of it though?
Both of the comics agreed on several key points. There is an element of truth to what they’re saying overall. It is extremely difficult to grasp the concept of subjectivity as a critic. Some people are just hardwired to react a certain way and cannot see any benefits to some things.
Nonetheless, some movies that are so bad and so cringey still have factors that make them enjoyable. A big reason that a lot of fans look back on movies like Attack of the Clones is because there is some element of masochistic enjoyment. It’s a train wreck you cannot look away from, and a lot of critics do not understand that concept.
